What is a Breast Uplift?
A breast uplift operation, known as mastopexy, is an operation which raises and reshapes and firms up sagging breasts to a more youthful position.
Breast implants can also be inserted at the same time to increase breast size or improve firmness.
Providing all is well, you can expect to go home the day after surgery.
What does the surgery involve?
To correct sagging and create more youthful looking breasts, cuts are made to sculpt the breasts into a new position, reduce the excess skin and raise the nipple/areola area.
The surgery takes about two hours to complete and is usually performed under a general anaesthetic.
The operated area will be swollen for a few days and you will feel some pain. However, this is not usually severe and the area only pulls and hurts when you move around.
What are the risks and side effects of surgery?
Complications are infrequent and usually minor. However, no surgery is without risk.
- A collection of blood or body fluid can build up underneath the skin. Rarely, a return to the operating theatre is needed to sort this problem.
- Since breast lift surgery often repositions the nipples, changes in nipple sensation can occur.
- Although rare, breast or nipple skin may fail to heal and occasionally, a skin graft is needed to close the wound, meaning more surgery.
- Future breast feeding may not be possible following this operation.
- There will be permanent scars where the incisions were made, although these usually fade and soften within a year of surgery. Occasionally, scars can thicken.
- Other risks include bleeding, wound infection, chest infection and blood clots in the leg (known as a deep vein thrombosis) although these risks are uncommon.
The new shape and position of your breasts will be visible immediately but it will be a few weeks before you can judge the final result.
